Free from Violence Strategy: Creative Policy Solutions to Ending Violence Against Children in Brazil
The 10th annual GPPN Conference, hosted by the Sciences Po School of Public Affairs, featured students' solution oriented ideas and prototypes to address public policy challenges identified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To participate, each GPPN member school carefully selected up to five student teams to present their projects and compete for the GPPN prize. The result: 32 teams from around the world met in Paris to showcase their ideas on how to solve some of the most pressing global challenges of today.
The “Free From Violence Strategy” prototype aims to assist the Federal Government, especially the National Secretariat for the Promotion of Children’s Rights (SNPDCA, acronym in Portuguese), in fostering creative solutions to tackle violence against children and building a monitoring strategy and system in order to track the implementation of complex policies and initiatives aimed at ending all forms of violence against children. As a monitoring strategy mainly focused on implementation rather than tracking indicators alone, it will ensure a broader view of the complexity of the issue and policies that need be implemented, producing knowledge regarding lessons learned, on what needs to be adapted in order to produce expected results and what works best to end violence against children in different subnational contexts in a diverse country like Brazil. The platform is designed to preserve a results-oriented perspective and a prototype is being developed to facilitate the management of actions, ensuring the mapping of policies and initiatives implemented at different levels of government and in partnership with different actors, fostering monitoring practices since the beginning and enabling the country to produce and assess the results and impact on the indicators.
Meet the team
Vanessa Yumi Fujinaga Souto holds a Bachelor’ degree in Social Communication -Advertising from São Judas Tadeu University. She holds an MBA in Marketing and is a Masters candidate in Public Policy and Management at Fundação Getúlio Vargas. With 8 years of experience in the Public Sector, she has worked at São Paulo’s City Hall implementing education policies, developing communication strategies and as an advisor at the Mayor’s office. Also, she was engaged in the São Paulo Mayor’s Election campaign. Currently, she works at Todos Pela Educação movement (Everyone for Education movement), a Brazilian civil society organization whose mission is to contribute to the effectiveness of the right of all children and young people to quality Basic Education.
Maitê Fernandez Gauto holds a Master’s degree in Public Policies and Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas and a Bachelor’ degree in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo. With 15 years of progressive experience in public policies, strategic planning, project management and advocacy, she has worked on different issues - human rights, violence prevention, public safety, education and children’s rights – in national and international arenas. Currently, she leads the Public Policy department at Abrinq Foundation, a Brazilian civil society organization engaged in safeguarding children’s rights in Brazil, influencing the Federal Government and the National Congress through social mobilization, advocacy actions and campaigns.
Lívia Magro de Souza holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas and a Bachelor’ degree in International Relations, from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. With 8 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, she has worked in fundraising activities - prospecting and managing partnerships with public and private sectors - and in developing and implementing strategies to monitor and evaluate results and impact of social and educational programs. Currently, she coordinates the Monitoring and Evaluation department at Liga Solidária, a Brazilian civil society organization that develops social programs in São Paulo.
